Bernie
Weekend
with Bernie--
What do you get when you cross 9 volunteers with a needy Wheaten
Terrier? You get a WURL (Wheaten Underground Railroad League). When
Jocelyn and Mike Marzo heard about Bernie's bad luck, they
automatically volunteered to foster and find him the perfect home.
Bernie, a 4 1/2 year old male Wheaten, was surrendered to Second
Chance rescue in Georgia. Bernie was neglected of basic medical
needs and TLC. He spent most of his days lying around the house
waiting for someone to play with him. He began to break
housetraining because no one would let him outside. Second Chance
rescue contacted Gwen at WIN and told her of the urgent need for a
home for Bernie. Two weeks, and hundreds of calls and emails later,
9 volunteers drove
Bernie through 7 states to his temporary home in New Jersey.
The
trip took a weekend to complete, with a sleepover at the Stork's
home in Maryland, but Bernie was a champ through the entire
adventure. He greeted each volunteer with endless Wheaten kisses and
hugs. Bernie lived and played with the Marzos for 3 short weeks
before a wonderful family in Plainsboro, New Jersey was located
through the WIN application process. The Milione family applied for
a Wheaten and waited patiently for the right "family member" to come
along--and he came along on May 6, 1999!
Bernie Milione now spends his days watching his human brother,
Chris, play hockey, and his sister, Cara, play with her friends. His
new mom and dad are happy that they RESCUED a Wheaten!!! We are
happy that Bernie received a second chance thanks to our new friends
at Second Chance rescue (not-for-profit).
